Co-op Recognized for Environmental Innovation and Concern for Community

Save a Bag, Help the Environment

Thank you for doing your part to reduce the use of plastic bags and the detrimental effects they have on the environment.  We’ve saved more than 10,000 plastic bags between September 2008 and today. Every time you used a reusable bag or didn’t take a bag we gave 10¢ to your choice of local environmental initiative.

Together we supported the following organizations (as of June 2010):

AWARDS

In 2008, the Co-op won the City of Guelph Water Conservation & Efficiency Awards- Community Educational Award which recognizes the efforts of Guelph residents, businesses and organizations who demonstrate innovation and excellence when it comes to water conservation.

The 7 College Ave. W. residence features one of very few systems in Ontario to integrate rainwater harvesting and grey water use.  It is a demonstration site for emerging water conservation technologies, creating visibility and promoting the capabilities of residential rainwater harvesting and grey water use systems.

The 7 College Ave. W. residence is accessible to students with disabilities and has been renovated with the assistance of University of Guelph students through the CSA Affordable Housing Initiative.  For more information on Co-op student housing and our 7 College Ave. W. project visit Co-op Housing.

The Co-op also received the Co-operative Social Responsibility Award which recognizes those within the co-op sector or credit union system who have demonstrated socially responsible business practices, and leadership in the implementation and promotion of sustainable social, economic, and/or environmental principles.

Nominated by members of the Ontario Co-operative Association, the Co-op is recognized for raising awareness about the environment and sustainability and providing youth with the opportunity to learn for themselves about the co-operative principles through experiential co-operative learning opportunities.
